Cowhide Rug Care Guide
A genuine cowhide rug is one of the easiest natural rugs to live with — the hair is naturally stain-resistant and the hide is tough. A few simple habits will keep yours looking rich for years.
Everyday care
- Vacuum regularly on a low-suction setting, always moving in the direction of the hair — never against it, and avoid beater bars.
- Shake the rug out outdoors now and then to release dust from the hair.
- Rotate the rug every few months so wear and light fall evenly across the hide.
Spills & spot cleaning
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — don't rub, which pushes liquid deeper.
- For spot cleaning, use a cloth dampened with mild soap and water, wiping in the direction of the hair, then let the rug air-dry flat, away from direct heat.
- For dried-on dirt, let it dry fully, then brush gently with a stiff brush in the direction of the hair and vacuum up the loosened debris.
What to avoid
- Never machine-wash, soak, or steam-clean a cowhide rug.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade natural coloring over time.
- Keep away from direct heat sources while drying — heat can stiffen the leather backing.
Curls & storage
If an edge curls after shipping, lay the rug flat with a heavy book on the edge overnight, or roll it briefly in the opposite direction. To store, roll the rug hair-side out, wrap it in a breathable cloth, and keep it in a cool, dry place.
